Eucalyptus honey is one of the most prized and beloved honeys in our country, and we can safely say, it's loved not only by the most refined palates but also by children. Compared to other types of honey, eucalyptus honey is particularly refined, recognizable by its intense consistency and its supreme flavor, with strong, balsamic notes. Today, this honey is used beyond culinary purposes for various therapeutic purposes, thanks to its remarkable beneficial properties.
It is especially widespread in the areas of Sicily and Sardinia, unlike fig honey which is a typical delicacy (almost exclusively) of the Calabria region.
As we'll soon discover, Eucalyptus Honey is a true cure-all for the respiratory tract, especially when taken daily during periods when seasonal ailments are not long in coming and we find ourselves battling coughs, sore throats, colds, and phlegm. Getting into the habit of eating at least a teaspoon of this honey a day, preferably pure, would provide significant benefits. Let's discover together what distinguishes Eucalyptus Honey from other honeys and what its unique and, above all, beneficial properties are for our body.
Eucalyptus Honey is a honey that, just like the Chestnut Honey or to Acacia Honey, is widely used in cooking as a side dish or in the preparation of cakes and delicious recipes; however, compared to these two, it's more of a type of honey consumed for immediate physical benefits. Of course, eucalyptus honey is also a true source of energy for anyone who tastes it, a natural energy booster that's impossible to give up.
The flower from which this honey comes is precisely the’Eucalyptus which, in its original meaning means “well hidden”, since this flower used to remain hidden by its petals until it was fully bloomed.
Its color is typically amber, with golden highlights, and its consistency is melting, dense, and creamy; it is a honey that crystallizes rapidly until, at a later stage, it takes on a beige color tending towards gray.
The beneficial properties of Eucalyptus Honey are numerous and perhaps better known than those of other honeys. First and foremost, it's rich in antioxidants, which, by counteracting free radicals, help maintain youthful skin while also reducing the appearance of signs of aging on the face.
Eucalyptus honey is an excellent beauty ally, helping to combat cellular aging and inflammation, as well as the presence of bacteria that invade our respiratory tract. Eucalyptus honey is also widely used to combat seasonal ailments, especially when combined with propolis, as the combination of the two has a powerful anti-viral effect, enhancing the effectiveness of the eucalyptus honey itself.
To fully benefit from it, we recommend consuming raw, unprocessed honey. Remember, pasteurizing honey generally weakens its beneficial properties. Therefore, a teaspoon of raw eucalyptus honey may be more than sufficient to clear the airways.
What if we want to try it in the kitchen? I recommend pairing Eucalyptus Honey with stronger-flavored cheeses, especially those aged, or with fruit, yogurt, or fish-based main courses with vegetable sides. It's also delicious in oriental-flavored sauces.
